Tim Van Milligan of Apogee Rocketry and his daughters are planning to attend Pioneer 2015 this weekend. If any UROC club members want to place an Apogee order for delivery this weekend Tim can bring it over. They can choose “store pick-up” as the shipping option from the Apogee web site and then leave a comment when ordering to have Tim bring it to the field. This will save on shipping and Hazmat fees.

Ken Eva Memorial Meet 2015

Ken Eva was a talented UROC modeler that was taken from us far too early. Each year, UROC honors him by hosting a meet in his memory.

The 2015 edition of the Ken Eva Memorial Meet featured a number of challenigng events. First up was the NAR Contest version of the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) event. In this event, contestants fly an egg to 300 meters and 60 seconds on the same flight. Two flights are required, and the contestant with the best combination over two flights wins – provided the egg didn’t break or crack on either flight! Altitudes are provided by altimeters. This event takes some practice to get right. Mark Snaufer took first in C Division by hitting a duration on the mark at 60 seconds on his first flight, and only 16 meters low of the target, followed by a 57 second flight and 33 meters low on his second flight. Bruce Bell took second place in C division when his model flew much higher thyan the target on his first flight. Clair Mills followed up in third place. The Pod Bay Doors team, led by Matt Steele, won Team Division with a stock NCR Bounty Hunter kit with flights just 3 meters over the target each time!

B Boost Glide saw Mark Snaufer combine a very nice first flight (with a return) with a flyaway second flight that caught two consecutive thermals. It went out of sight going up around two and a half minutes, and was never seen again. Clair Mills was actually ahead of Mark after the first round, but didn’t catch the big lift on his second flight, and finished second. Bruce Bell ended up third with a 110 second flight on his second attempt. The Pod Bay Doors also lost a model to the thermal gods to help them win Team division over the Dizzy Dog Team (Randy Redd and Fred Williams).

B Helicopter Duration was also won by Mark Snaufer, who used good flights of 41 and 75 seconds from his Apogee Gyro Chaser to edge Clair Mills and Bruce Bell. The Pod Bay Doors found another good thermal to put their Rotaroc into, and got a flight of 98 seconds.

Sport Scale brought out the nice models. Unfortunately, Clair Mills’ beautiful Bomarc pranged badly! Mark Snaufer won with a two stage Wac Corporal, followed by Bruce Bell’s IQSY Tomahawk. The Nike Smoke of the Pod Bay Doors won Team Division, followed by the Dizzy Dog Juno.

Meet Champions were Mark Snaufer (C Division) and Pod Bay Doors (Team). UROC gained another 9700+ points in the national club standings.

Pioneer 2015 is scheduled for May 30 with the same events. Hope to see you there!

UROC Fall Open (UFO) Part 1 Results

Highlights of the meet included:

Clair Mill's Aerobee Hi that took first in Sport Scale, giving him enough points to be meet champion in C Division;

Mark Snaufer's A PD flight; the timers lost sight of it at 14 minutes, but it was up much longer than that. Mark went a long ways downfield to recover the model!

Matt Steele had an A PD flight that was almost 10 minutes - unlike Mark's flight, his landed about 300 yards from the pad!

D Eggloft had it's share of broken egg, but Mark Snaufer had the best flight of the day at 342 meters;

D RG was a little crazy, featuring a number of crashes by Bruce Bell and Randy Redd, but Clair Mills had a fantastic flight of just over 3 minutes to win.

C Streamer was dominated by Matt's Steele's 215 second flight, while Mark Snaufer just edged Bruce Bell for the top spot in C Division by 11 seconds

UROC gained 8424 points in the national standings.

UROC Fall Open 2013 Meet Results

UROC’s annual fall meet, UFO has grown up a bit. Traditionally, the title stood for UROC Fall Open meet, but for the last two years we have had enough interest (and proxy flyers) to make the meet a NAR regional contest instead. The good part about that is you can fly 25% more events than at an Open meet. This year’s UFO meet featured E Eggloft Altitude (with altitudes determined by altimeters), A Rocket Glide, A Streamer Duration and Scale.

The weather was cold when we started, and the Frank Hunt Field breeze kicked in a little earlier than usual. The most vexing problem, though, was a thin, high haze layer at about 2,000 ft. Matt Steele of the Pod Bay Doors Team was first to fly his red BT-50 egglofter on an E6-8. The model got a good boost, deployed the tracking powder in a large visible cloud….and disappeared. One altimeter sacrificed to the field. Bruce Bell went up shortly thereafter, had a nice straight flight on an E20, good parachute deployment, and….disappeared! Bruce also lost his model! Fred Williams of the Dizzy Dog team put in a nice flight that was returned, only to break the egg. Steve Anderson had a good flight, and returned his egg intact, only to have the altimeter fail to read. Matt was able to fly his backup model on a black powder E9-8 and get an altitude of 719 meters to win the event.

A Rocket Glider had only two entries, but they both worked well. Fred put up a slide wing glider for a solid flight of 29 seconds. Matt put up a swing/flopwing model that looks very complicated, but glides really nice after the wing rotates 90 degrees and the wing tips flop out. Matt had to chase his model far downfield to recover it after a 101 second flight.

A Streamer Duration was a lot of fun, as almost everyone can fly that event. In A Division, Mackinnon Balding edged out his cousin Zander Moody by a mere 3 seconds. In C Division, Sally Bell managed to edge Bruce Bell for first place with the day’s best flight of 66 seconds. The Pod Bay Doors won Team Division with a 51 second flight when both the Dizzy Dogs and the Pod Babe Doors Team were disqualified.

Scale is always fun to fly – there are always a number of interesting models. Steve Anderson won C Division with a nicely done V-2. The Pod Bay Doors’ Astrobee 1500 outpointed the Dizzy Dog Team’s IQSY Tomahawk. The Pod Babe Doors’ Nike Smoke has a nice flight on a B6-4.

The A Division Champion was Mackinnon Balding; C Division was won by Steve Anderson; and top honors in Team Division were taken by the Pod Bay Doors. UROC gained almost 5,000 points for the meet.

We plan to host two NAR Regional meets in the spring, with events to be announced shortly.

Ken Eva Memorial Meet 2013 Report

In the 1985-86 timeframe, a gentleman by the name of Ken Eva showed up on the flying field at local Utah meets. He was eager to fly and interested in improving his skills. Over the course of just a few meets, he had gone from an also-ran to a serious contender. Unfortunately, he contracted a rare form of liver cancer, and passed away all too young, leaving behind a wife, son and three daughters. In the spirit of remembering our friend, UROC’s first NAR regional meet of 2013 was held in his name.

The weather was calm and warm as the contest flyers met at Frank Hunt Field on May 4th to try their hand at three events: Scale, A Boost Glide, and F Dual Eggloft Altitude (Altimeter).

A Boost Glider saw a lot of interest from the flyers.  Steve Anderson brought out a trusty Flat Cat that boosted very nicely on both an A8-3 and an A10-3T, but his glider was a little nose heavy, resulting in a 20 second time and 4th place in C Division. Bruce Bell brought out some nice models for him & Sally to enter.  Sally’s model seemed to be the better of the two, notching two flights over 40 seconds and a total score of 83 seconds to take second place. Bruce managed a 22 second flight, then re-trimmed his glider to get a 33 second flight, and took third place with a score of 55 seconds.  Matt Steele won the even with very nice times of 66 and 78 seconds on his two flights for a 144 second total.

In the Team Division, the proxy team Riders on the Storm (Chas Russell & Pat McCarthy) flew for 44 seconds on their Xebec glider to outpace the Dizzy Dog Team (Randy Redd & Fred Williams) with 8 seconds.

F Dual Eggloft Altitude (Altimeter) was the meet’s most challenging event.  The goal is to fly two eggs to the highest altitude possible on an F motor, and then return the eggs and a NAR-approved altimeter back safely. Frank Hunt Field’s hard, unforgiving ground requires a fairly soft landing to avoid breaking the eggs at touchdown. If you mess up, there are omelets for everyone! As it was, three of the four entries in the event broke an egg at least once.

In C Division, Bruce Bell flew an F25-6 model to a hard landing that cracked both eggs. Matt Steele flew a straight up F50-9 flight to and altitude of 688 meters. After a long walk to the other side of the road to retrieve the model under its large orange parachute, Matt returned both eggs intact to set a new national record.

In Team Division, Randy planted a model firmly on the other side of the road, and ended up losing both the eggs and the expensive altimeter. Fred flew the team’s backup model to a 368m flight. The Riders of the Storm had a good first flight on an F27-8 Redline motor, but broke the top egg. Their second flight on an F28-8 Blue Thunder motor proved to be enough to win with a 383m flight.

The last event on the schedule was Scale. In combined A/B division, Cassidy Steele won the event with a nice D12 powered flight of her Sandhawk, edging Mackinnon Balding’s Little John and Zander Moody’s SM-3.

In C Division, Matt Steele’s Bumper Wac won the event with a nice two stage flight (810 points). It was followed by Bruce Bell’s nice IQSY Tomahawk (665 pts) and Steven Anderson’s 3rd place Raven (640 pts). Robyn Steele’s Nike Smoke ended up in 4th.

In Team division, the Riders on the Storm Trailblazer II planted itself in the hard ground when the engine mount ejected. This handed the victory to the Dizzy Dog Team’s IQSY Tomahawk with 710 points.

The C division meet champion was Matt Steele, followed by Bruce Bell and Steve Anderson, while the Dizzy Dog Team, with a big win in Scale, took the team title. UROC grabbed 7,428 points for the national club standings.

Special thanks go out to Cathy Redd and Debbie Williams for helping with the timing.

Our next meet will be on June 1 (7:30AM start time) with Sport Scale, F Dual Eggloft Altitude (Altimeter), and A Streamer Duration (multi-round). Hope to see you there!
