The annual UROC Christmas party was as usual, not to be missed.
The UROC Christmas Party was better than any Christmas Party of recent memory. There was plenty of food, it was affordable for everyone, there was plenty of room and, best of all, it was lots of fun.Last year's party, as good as it was, had it's problems.
UROC members Matt Peterson, Blane Nelson, and Michael Loosle trekked to Plaster City, CA for the third annual Plaster Blaster. Blane Nelson got his level 1 certification on a PML AMRAAM and Matt Peterson got his level 2 certification with a Polecat Aerospace Skeeter.
There were many "big" interesting progects at Plaster Blaster. There was the Thumper Drag Race. 21 "M" motor Thumpers lined up for a drag race. Of the 21, 9 left the pad at once. It was loud! and impressive. Later the rest launched in a group of six, then singles as the rocketeers got the bugs worked out.
Pioneer ?99 turned out to be the biggest contest that the Utah area has seen in a long time. A total of sixteen contestants participated in a weekend of great weather that produced some excellent flights. Four events were held: B BG, C Streamer, D Helicopter and E Dual Egg Duration.
The first launch of the year for UROC has to be termed a resounding success. Our club grew faster than the weeds on the PonyExpress Range in 1999. We knew we had to get things upgraded before the 2000 flying season started. Much consideration went into new procedures and new equipment.
Since it has been so long, I thought I would remind everyone what a rocket launch was like so as to whet our appetites for Hellfire. Last year we had the unexpected luxury of launching in both July and Auguest. In stark contrast, 2000 has been exceptionally dry and hot. Launching rockets at PETR would have been reckless, to say the least. UROC chose not to fly.
The official date for this launch was Saturday and Sunday, the 20th and 21st. The weather was horrible. So, we cancelled in hopes that the next weekend would be better. A group of us gathered at the launch site Saturday morning to cold air, rain, and of course? wind. By 10:00 we had decided to scrap the day and hope that perhaps Sunday would be better. People began to arrive around 8:30 and by 10:00 the range was up and going full bore. Thanks to everyone that helped Paul in getting it going.
