If you came out to the April launch (remember the wind) UROC member John Erickson (Droopy) attempted a level 3 certification flight. The flight was absolutely beautiful. Everything worked perfectly, that is, until it landed. The rocket had a big chute, and once the rocket made it back to the deck, the wind caught its chute and began dragging the rocket across the desert. After the rocket was retrieved major damage had been sustained to the booster. So, John is going to be at HellFire on Sunday with a fixed up Hyper-Impaitence and will again try for his level 3.
John has worked his way, in less than a year, up to his level three certification. John is a pilot in the United States Air Force. He is slated to head back over to Iraq shortly, and had to get this pesky level 3 thing out of the way before heading out. He's aiming to fly at the April 19th Sport Launch.
The rocket aptly named HyperImpatience is a LOC HyperLOC 1600. John is working with UROC's Tripoli Advanced Projects advisory team (Brad Overmoe and Rich Evans). To ensure his best chance for a successful Level 3 attempt.
John expects the rocket to weigh in at about 45 lbs when it's done. He's expecting the craft to scream up to about 10K feet doing about .82 mach with an Aerotech M1315W 75mm motor from Bruce at Rocket Dog Hobby. The body tube has been fiberglassed with one layer of heavy fiberglass and 2 layers of light, and then had peel ply, breather, and shrink tape over that to remove all excess epoxy.
The fins are made from G10 and have fillets consisting of West Systems epoxy mixed into a thick consistency with milled fiberglass. The outer fins fillets have an additional fillet of epoxy mixed with microballoons for an easily sanded fillet to make for a better finish.
For recovery the rocket has 2 PerfectFlite MAWD altimeters set for dual deployment and will use a Giant Leap TAC-9B parachute in a deployment bag for the main recovery. The rocket willl deploy drogueless at apogee. John also has a Beeline GPS tracking system in the nosecone, and a digital videocamera in the upper section to take inflight video.
