UROC’s annual fall meet, UFO has grown up a bit. Traditionally, the title stood for UROC Fall Open meet, but for the last two years we have had enough interest (and proxy flyers) to make the meet a NAR regional contest instead. The good part about that is you can fly 25% more events than at an Open meet. This year’s UFO meet featured E Eggloft Altitude (with altitudes determined by altimeters), A Rocket Glide, A Streamer Duration and Scale.

The weather was cold when we started, and the Frank Hunt Field breeze kicked in a little earlier than usual. The most vexing problem, though, was a thin, high haze layer at about 2,000 ft. Matt Steele of the Pod Bay Doors Team was first to fly his red BT-50 egglofter on an E6-8. The model got a good boost, deployed the tracking powder in a large visible cloud….and disappeared. One altimeter sacrificed to the field. Bruce Bell went up shortly thereafter, had a nice straight flight on an E20, good parachute deployment, and….disappeared! Bruce also lost his model! Fred Williams of the Dizzy Dog team put in a nice flight that was returned, only to break the egg. Steve Anderson had a good flight, and returned his egg intact, only to have the altimeter fail to read. Matt was able to fly his backup model on a black powder E9-8 and get an altitude of 719 meters to win the event.

A Rocket Glider had only two entries, but they both worked well. Fred put up a slide wing glider for a solid flight of 29 seconds. Matt put up a swing/flopwing model that looks very complicated, but glides really nice after the wing rotates 90 degrees and the wing tips flop out. Matt had to chase his model far downfield to recover it after a 101 second flight.

A Streamer Duration was a lot of fun, as almost everyone can fly that event. In A Division, Mackinnon Balding edged out his cousin Zander Moody by a mere 3 seconds. In C Division, Sally Bell managed to edge Bruce Bell for first place with the day’s best flight of 66 seconds. The Pod Bay Doors won Team Division with a 51 second flight when both the Dizzy Dogs and the Pod Babe Doors Team were disqualified.

Scale is always fun to fly – there are always a number of interesting models. Steve Anderson won C Division with a nicely done V-2. The Pod Bay Doors’ Astrobee 1500 outpointed the Dizzy Dog Team’s IQSY Tomahawk. The Pod Babe Doors’ Nike Smoke has a nice flight on a B6-4.

The A Division Champion was Mackinnon Balding; C Division was won by Steve Anderson; and top honors in Team Division were taken by the Pod Bay Doors. UROC gained almost 5,000 points for the meet.

We plan to host two NAR Regional meets in the spring, with events to be announced shortly.
