Kent Spillman moving, new Prefect needed

UROC member and all-around good guy Kent Spillman will be moving to Wyoming later this year. Kent has been an important part of this club over the years. He could always be relied on to help with the hard jobs; packing the trailer, helping build launch systems, fixing equipment, etc., all without a complaint. In both rocketry and attitude Kent has repeatedly shown us how to do it right: His skill as a craftsman and rocketeer are unrivaled and he has proven himself again and again to be the kind of quality member UROC strives for.

Kent has been our Tripoli Prefect for several years now. He has done a tremendous job in this capacity and has helped to certify many of our members into high power. Unfortunately, with his leaving, the club is forced to find a new Prefect to take Kent’s place.

This position is not one to be taken lightly. Since the Prefect is the leader of the Prefecture, this individual must have knowledge of the rules of the Tripoli Rocketry Association, understand the proper operation of a safe rocket flying environment and have an understanding of the laws and regulations regarding High Power Rocketry. The minimum requirements for a member to be a Prefect is one year as an active Tripoli member and must have attained certification level 2.

One of the most important functions of the Prefect is to assist new members in receiving their certifications. The Prefect can bestow level 1 and level 2 certifications and administer the level 2 certification examination. It is important that the Prefect make themselves consistently available at launches and other times to help make these certifications a positive and successful experience for the members.

The prefect is also responsible for obtaining the required authorizations from Tripoli for launches such as our Research launches as well as all the insurance documentation required each year. This individual must work closely with the other officers of UROC to coordinate the needs of the club as a whole. The Prefect is also UROC’s representative to the rest of the Tripoli Rocketry Association; they are expected to put forth a positive image of our club to the rest of Tripoli as well as the public at large.

The election for our new Tripoli Prefect will take place at the October meeting. If you are interested in being considered for the position, please make sure to attend the meeting. Be prepared to give a brief statement about yourself and your campaign platform. Only current Tripoli members will be allowed to vote or run in this election. You must bring your membership card to the meeting! The winner of the election will be in office for the remainder of 2007, through 2008 until officer elections in January of 2009.

In the meantime, if you get a chance, drop Kent a quick note and let him know how much we will miss having him at our launches and meetings.

We’ll miss you Kent!
