UROC Flies High at SpaceWeek Featured

ImageLarry Holmes headed up the team of Dot and Frank Hunt, Bruce Beck, Todd and Karen Turnblom for what turned out to be a huge SpaceWeek presentation.

Space Week is organized in large measure by Utah Space Week Director and Creekside Elementary School sixth-grade teacher Donna Trease. Donna is the only NASA-certified teacher in the state of Utah and is the recipient of the Governor’s Medal for Science and Technology. Trease is scheduled to take 24 students to U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala. this June.

According to Larry, the school told him that there were close to 1,000 kids at this launch. Larry said he was “little dazed at that” but he thinks they all enjoyed themselves and UROC was represented by the team very well.

Dot and Bruce helped in prepping rockets for the demonstration and Frank provided rockets as well as the launch pad.  The team had a bit of a problem with the launch controller but Todd came to the rescue with his controller just in time. Todd also provided some of the larger motor flights of the day.  According to Dot “We sent up a lot of rockets in a short time, Most with small motors as the field was very restricted.”

Astronaut Jeffrey Ashby was a guest at the launch. Commander Ashby piloted the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1999, the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 2001, and served as flight commander of the Space Shuttle Atlantis in 2002. During his space flights, Ashby was involved in deploying the Chandra X-ray Observatory, operating the shuttle’s robotic arm to transfer Canadarm2 from the shuttle payload bay to the International Space Station and installing a 15-ton integrated truss segment to the space station. After the UROC launch he came up to Larry and said that it was a “good show!” Larry replied “that was a real compliment coming from one who rode so many tons of what we use as ounces!”

Thanks to Larry, Bruce, Dot, Frank, Todd and Karen, we really appreciate you taking time out of your day to help with this. This has been an important event for the Davis School District and UROC for years. It’s good to see the partnership continue. Good job guys!
