Currently, Fire crews are fighting a fast moving wildfire that has forced the partial closure of a major road in Tooele County. Fire officials say the fire was sparked by an equipment malfunction around 8:30 Thursday morning and quickly spread. The high winds in the area are making it difficult for the fire crews to get the wildfire under control.
State Route 73 between Tooele and Cedar Fort was closed for a time Thursday afternoon as firefighters worked to gain control of the 300 acre blaze. One lane of the road is now open, but drivers can only get through with a Utah Highway Patrol vehicle escort.
While the fire is not threatening any structures, crews are worried about it spreading to nearby BLM land. In that case, campgrounds may have to be evacuated. The wildfire is within 3 miles of the Frank Hunt Field Launch site. As such, the Utah Rocket Club has discussed options and agreed with the BLM order to cancel our launch for this weekend. The safety of our flyers and our spectators is far too important to risk the launch.
The launch for May will NOT be rescheduled, given the current conditions of the launch site, we may experience problems into the following months as well. We are working with the BLM to discuss options and will keep you informed as more answers become available.
