Upcoming May Launch Looks Good

The high power sport launch scheduled for May 5 and 6 currently looks good. This is our Cinco DeMayo launch and it will take place at our "Frank Hunt Field" launch site. The set up will begin around 8:30am and we will hopefully be flying shortly thereafter. We can use help with the set up as always. Provided the weather continues to be good, we will have flying throughout Sunday morning as well. Flyers are welcome to camp out Saturday night at the launch site. Here are a couple of notes to be aware of for this launch:

Both Jim and Jed are planning on being there on Saturday and possibly Sunday as well, but you should contact them to make sure they will be.

If you are needing to purchase motors, our local motor Vendor Tim Boschert of DasRocket will be onsite for part of the day Saturday, not at all on Sunday. You should contact him if you have any specific motor needs. While we are talking about Das Rockets, in honor of Cinco De Mayo  they will be offering 10% off of all green propellant that they have in stock at the launch!

This launch will be held under the Tripoli Research rules. Also be aware that only members of UROC are allowed to participate in the launch. If you are not a member you can sign up online or at the launch. As always, we will need help running the launch, RSO, LCO, pad managers and lots of help setting up and tearing down the range. We do have a Porta Potty ordered for this launch. Set up is expected to begin around 8:00 am and we will fly in to the early afternoon or until the wind gets to be too strong and if the weather permits maybe start up some model rocketry in the evening. As always, we will need help with LCO/ RSO/ Pad Management and set up and tear down. Last launch there were 5 of us to clean the entire launch range up. It would be great to have some additional help this time. Based on attendance on both days we will evaluate the launch schedule as we progress through the remainder of this year.

Tripoli Utah - Prefect Election

After 10 years, Tim Boschert has decided to step away from his role as Tripoli Prefect for the Tripoli Utah Chapter (UROC). Tim will continue to be a member of the club and will continue his Das Rocket's motor business. Tim has done a great job as prefect over the years. He has been willing to help new members with their certs and been a great source of knowledge for all UROC's members. He has done a tremendous job in the Prefect capacity and has helped to certify many of our members into high power. Unfortunately, with his leaving, the club is forced to find a new Prefect to take his place.

This position is not one to be taken lightly. Since the Prefect is the leader of the Prefecture, this individual must have knowledge of the rules of the Tripoli Rocketry Association, understand the proper operation of a safe rocket flying environment and have an understanding of the laws and regulations regarding High Power Rocketry. The minimum requirements for a member to be a Prefect is one year as an active Tripoli member and must have attained certification level 2.

One of the most important functions of the Prefect is to assist new members in receiving their certifications. The Prefect can bestow level 1 and level 2 certifications and administer the level 2 certification examinations. It is important that the Prefect make themselves consistently available at launches and other times to help make these certifications a positive and successful experience for the members.

The prefect is also responsible for obtaining the required authorizations from Tripoli for launches such as our Research launches as well as all the insurance documentation required each year. This individual must work closely with the other officers of UROC to coordinate the needs of the club as a whole. The Prefect is also UROC’s representative to the rest of the Tripoli Rocketry Association; they are expected to put forth a positive image of our club to the rest of Tripoli as well as the public at large.

Tim will continue in his role as prefect through HellFire and an election for our new Tripoli Prefect will take place at the September UROC meeting. If you are interested in being considered for the position, please make sure to attend the meeting. Be prepared to give a brief statement about yourself and your campaign platform. Only current Tripoli members will be allowed to vote or run in this election. You must bring your membership card to the meeting! The winner of the election will be in office for the remainder of 2016, through 2017 until officer elections in January of 2018.

If you would like to contact Tim in regards to the position and any other questions, please contact him here.

Bad Ass Betty

The Bad Ass Betty (formerly known as Black Betty) is 5.5 inches in diameter and  over 6 feet long. It sports a 76 mm. motor mount .  The Betty will most likely take off on HellFire's Research launch.

The Betty is "M" capable with flights up to 9000 feet, but will probably fly on a "L" for HellFire to about 5 - 6000 feet.

Construction features an epoxyless design made from a single 5' diameter carpet tube, ½" birch ply fins and centering rings and a Curtis Turner elliptical nose cone.

Oh My Heck Bertha!

BerthaThis demure craft is a mere 7.5 in diameter and over 9 feet tall! The business end sports a  98 mm motor mount.  The OMH Bertha flies on Full Ms or (N motor preferred) and is reaches altitudes around 8,000 feet  to 12,000 feet respectively.  He will be lofting this bird into the sky on Thursday during the Tripoli Research Launch portion of HellFire on a motor he built.

The rocket is especially unique in it's construction. Most of the rocket is actually screwed together rather than epoxied together. This is for a couple of reasons, first, Tim is hyper-sensitive to epoxies so he can't be around them, secondly, the Bertha's fin design is notorious for breaking one when it lands. So, Tim  built the fins so that they bolt on and off. Smart.
